The State in its endeavor to address malnutrition among children enacted Republic Act No. 11037 otherwise known as the “Masustansyang Pagkain para sa Batang Pilipino Act of 2018”

RA 11037 mandates the institutionalization of a comprehensive National Feeding Program for undernourished children in Public Day Care, Kindergarten, and Elementary Schools noting the confirmed link between food and nutrition and the capacity of children to develop and learn.

Anent this, the Sanggunian in its previous session held last March 3, 2020 passed SB Resolution No. 2020-034 sponsored by Hon. Maria Belen B. Sabio. The legislative action authorized Mayor Romeo D. Araṅa to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Regional Office XII and Day Care Worker Federation for the implementation of the Supplementary Feeding Program for CY 2020-2021 10th Cycle.

Moreover, under Republic Act No. 7160 or the “Local Government Code of 1991”, LGUs are mandated to provide health and social welfare services to its constituents which include programs and projects on child and youth welfare.

John Karlo D. Ballentes, MSWD Officer of LGU Midsayap, said that the Supplementary Feeding Program is the provision to targeted children of at least one (1) fortified meal for a period of not less than One Hundred Twenty (120) days in a year. This has been DSWD’s contribution to Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) program of the government in the past years. The amount of P15.00 per child/per day is allocated for a hot meal composed of rice and viand of milk and alternative meals.

The MSWDO shall implement the supplemental feeding program in all day care centers in Midsayap and shall be benefited by 2,557 day care children.

The Sanggunian hopes that through this feeding program, the prevalence of under and over nutrition among Midsayap children shall be addressed.
